Designing For Book Covers

One aspect of my freelance work I really enjoy is designing images for book covers. My editorial work is represented by Arcangel Images. I love the creative possibilities this offers and have included some of my recent and favourite front covers.

Into The Dreaming

I very rarely write about my pictures especially on my blog because I like it to be a visual diary of my interactions with the landscape but today I thought I would put down some thoughts on this particular group of images and others like them that convey an almost timeless and dreamlike state in nature. If I had to account for what I am seeking in a 'good' landscape it is that dream like state which draws you in and allows awareness of time to stop for a while. Its a process entered into not just by me making the image but which also engages the viewer in hopefully the same way.

My own relationship with the landscape is integral to who I am as a person and as an artist and provides a daily experience that is almost bordering on 'spiritual'. I don't have a religion but to go out each day and record and think about my own relationship with landscape and nature is a powerful experience and often translates into pictures with a heightened emotive content by the selections and the edits I make. Mood is so key and Winter is my favourite time of year to record. Its a compelling idea to be able to record what you see but convey human emotions through pictures whether its melancholy or feelings of isolation and sadness, just like a composer with a piece of music, and convey it to the viewer. That is the attraction for me. Its not just what I can 'find' or 'see'? Its what is conveyed and what is the story, the narrative of that place at that time. It's endlessly fascinating and intriguing to me.
